How is a wire bag knitted?

The same way as fabric: a continuous strand is worked into rows of interlocking loops. Fine-gauge wire is soft enough to bend around a needle, so a maker can knit it by hand or on a knitting frame. The loops give the finished mesh stretch and drape that woven or linked metal does not have.

Why brass rather than steel wire?

At fine gauges brass is more ductile than steel — it bends smoothly and stays where it is put, which makes it kinder to knit and kinder to repair. It is also naturally warm-toned and develops a patina rather than rust. Steel is springier and harder on the hands, though the Chinese term wire-mesh bag (steel-wire bag) names the whole category.

Why do handmade wire bags vary?

Loop tension in hand-knitted wire varies the way handwriting does. Metal holds every decision permanently — there is no blocking or steaming it flat afterwards, unlike wool. Small irregularities in the knit are the signature of the process, not defects.

The strangest thing about a knitted wire bag is that the word "knitted" is literal. Fine metal wire is worked in rows of loops — the same structure as a jumper — until metal starts behaving like cloth: it drapes, stretches slightly, and slouches around whatever it holds.

At fine gauges, brass wire is soft enough to bend around a needle and ductile enough not to snap when a loop is pulled through a loop. Knitting it is slow — wire does not slide the way wool does, and every stitch stays exactly where the hands left it. There is no washing, blocking or steaming a mistake away afterwards; the knit is the permanent record of its own making.

Why the structure matters

Loops also give the mesh its stretch: a knitted bag yields and slouches where a woven or ring-linked one stays rigid. The hardware: rivets, not seams

Why no two match

Hand tension in wire varies like handwriting, and metal remembers all of it. Two bags from the same maker in the same week will read as siblings, not twins — slightly different slouch, slightly different sparkle across the knit. That variance is the difference between a made object and a moulded one, and it is much of the point of choosing an independent, handmade bag at all.
